Gen 1 Lincoln Mark VIII Valve Cover R/R
Valve Cover and Gasket Removal for the 1996 Lincoln Mark VIII. 1993 to 1995 Similar. Gen 2 is similar minus the intake and plug wires.
RH Side
Removal
-
Remove engine appearance cover retaining bolt and nuts.
-
Remove engine appearance cover from vehicle.
Engine Appearance Cover
-
Disconnect engine control sensor wiring (12A581) at intake air temperature sensor (IAT sensor) connector and crankcase ventilation tube (6758) from air cleaner outlet tube (9B659).
-
Completely loosen air cleaner outlet tube to throttle body bolt (captured bolt).
-
Loosen clamp on air cleaner outlet tube to engine air cleaner (ACL) (9600) and disconnect air cleaner outlet tube.
-
Remove remaining bolt from support bracket clamp on RH valve cover (6582) to air cleaner outlet tube.
-
Remove air cleaner outlet tube and engine intake air resonator (9F763).

Remove two retaining nuts from engine air cleaner outlet tube bracket (9B625) to valve cover and remove engine air cleaner outlet tube bracket.

Remove four nuts retaining RH ignition wire cover and remove cover.
-
CAUTION: Do not pull on the ignition wire as it may separate from the connector in the boot.
Disconnect ignition wires from spark plugs (12405) with a gentle twist/pull motion on the spark plug boot. Remove spark plugs.

Remove bolts and studs retaining RH valve cover to cylinder head (6049)

Remove valve cover.
Valve Cover
Installation
-
Clean sealing surfaces of cylinder head and valve cover. Remove all traces of oil, dirt and previously applied sealant from engine front cover and cylinder head sealing surfaces. Sealing surfaces must be clean and dry before applying sealant.

Install new spark plug bore to valve cover seals. Use of sealant is not required.
-
Position and, using a suitable adhesive, seal new valve cover gasket (6584) into valve cover.
-
Apply Silicone Gasket and Sealant F6AZ-19562-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSE-M4G323-A6 in both places where engine front cover (6019) meets cylinder head. Install valve cover onto cylinder head.

Install bolts and stud bolts into valve cover. Tighten bolts and studs to 8-12 Nm (71-106 lb-in), no more than four minutes after applying sealer.

Install spark plugs and ignition wires.
-
Install ignition wire cover and retaining nuts onto valve cover studs. Tighten retaining nuts to 2-4 Nm (18-35 lb-in).

Install engine air cleaner outlet tube bracket onto cover retaining stud bolts and install nuts. Tighten retaining nuts to 8-12 Nm (71-106 lb-in).

Install air cleaner outlet tube and engine intake air resonator.

Install air cleaner outlet tube to throttle body bolt and tighten to 1.8-2.6 Nm (16-23 lb-in).

Install engine air cleaner outlet tube bracket and tighten to 5.1-7.1 Nm (45-63 lb-in).
-
Connect air cleaner outlet tube to engine air cleaner and tighten engine air cleaner tube clamp (9C632) to 1.7-3.3 Nm (15-29 lb-in).
-
Connect engine control sensor wiring to the IAT sensor connector and crankcase ventilation tube toair cleaner outlet tube.
-
Install engine appearance cover and install retaining bolt and retaining nuts. Tighten bolt and nuts to 5.2-7.2 Nm (46-64 lb-in).
-
Start engine and check for leaks.

Remove engine appearance cover retaining bolt and nuts.

Remove windshield wiper module assembly.
-
Loosen clamp to engine intake air resonator from air cleaner outlet tube and remove engine intake air resonator.

Remove positive crankcase ventilation valve (PCV valve) (6A666) from crankcase ventilation grommet (6A892) and position aside.

Remove two retaining nuts from the EGR vacuum regulator solenoid bracket and vacuum hose clip. Position brackets out of the way.

Remove oil level indicator tube retaining nut from valve cover.
-
Remove four nuts retaining LH ignition wire cover and remove cover.
-
Remove strut appearance cover from LH front fender apron (16054) next to power distribution box.
-
Loosen power distribution box and bracket.
-
Disconnect fuel charging wiring (9D930) at the 42 pin connector.
-
Disconnect vacuum supply hose from the power brake booster (2005) and secondary air injection control solenoid vacuum valve (9H465).
-
CAUTION: Do not pull on the ignition wire as it may separate from the connector in the boot.
Disconnect ignition wires from spark plugs with a gentle twist/pull motion on the spark plug boot.

Remove bolts and stud bolts retaining LH valve cover to cylinder head.
-
CAUTION: The valve cover may be difficult to remove. Do not pry or force valve cover or possible damage may occur.
NOTE: With the valve cover removed, make sure the spark plug bore to valve cover seals are in place on the spark plug bore towers of the valve cover.
Carefully remove valve cover.

Installation

Clean sealing surfaces of cylinder head and valve cover. Remove all traces of oil, dirt and previously applied sealant from engine front cover and cylinder head sealing surfaces. Sealing surfaces must be clean and dry before applying sealant.

Install new spark plug bore to valve cover seals. Use of sealant is not required.

Position and, using a suitable adhesive, glue new valve cover gasket into valve cover.

Apply Silicone Gasket and Sealant F6AZ-19562-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSE-M4G323-A6 in both places where engine front cover meets cylinder head. Install valve cover onto cylinder head.

Install bolts and stud bolts into valve cover. Tighten bolts and studs to 8-12 Nm (71-106 lb-in) no more than four minutes after applying sealer.

Install spark plugs and ignition wires.
-
Install ignition wire cover and retaining nuts onto valve cover studs. Tighten retaining nuts to 5-7 Nm (40-65 lb-in).

Position oil level indicator tube (6754) onto valve cover stud and install retaining nut. Tighten to 8-12 Nm (71-106 lb-in).
-
Position EGR vacuum regulator solenoid bracket over studs. Install two retaining nuts. Tighten to 8-12 Nm (71-106 lb-in).
-
Install positive crankcase ventilation valve into crankcase ventilation grommet.
-
Install power distribution box and bracket.
-
Install strut appearance cover onto LH front fender apron, next to power distribution box.
-
Connect fuel charging wiring at the 42 pin connector.
-
Install vacuum supply hose to the power brake booster and secondary air injection control solenoid vacuum valve.
-
Install engine intake air resonator onto air cleaner outlet tube and studs. Tighten resonator to air cleaner outlet tube clamp to 1.8-2.6 Nm (16-23 lb-in).

Install engine appearance cover and install retaining bolt and retaining nuts. Tighten bolt to 9-12 Nm (80-106 lb-in) and nuts to 5.2-7.2 Nm (46-64 lb-in).

Start engine and check for leaks.
