Lincoln Mark VIII Strut Rod Removal and Installation
Strut, Lower Arm
Removal
-
Raise vehicle on hoist.
-
Remove tire and wheel assembly.
-
CAUTION: Do not hold front suspension lower arm strut (3468) or damage surface in area shown.
Hold front suspension lower arm strut on flats with wrench. Remove front sub-frame retaining nut.

Remove rubber bumper from front suspension lower arm strut, if equipped.
-
Mark position, or note number of visible threads at front suspension lower arm strut rear sub-frame nut.

Back off front suspension lower arm strut rear sub-frame nut.
-
Remove front suspension lower arm strut, front suspension lower arm retaining nut, front suspension washer (3A141) and front suspension lower arm strut bushing (3A140).

Remove lower shock bolt and nut.
-
Remove brake hose bracket to body retaining bolt.
-
Remove front brake anti-lock sensor attaching bolt and position front brake anti-lock sensor (2C204) out of the way.

Pry front suspension lower arm (3079) rearward and remove front suspension lower arm strut.
Installation
-
If front suspension lower arm strut bushings at front sub-frame (5C145) were removed, de-burr front suspension lower arm strut ferrules (3B282) before reassembly. If new front suspension lower arm strut ferrules are used, the inner front suspension lower arm strut ferrule must be shorter than the outer front suspension lower arm strut ferrule. Cut up to 6 mm (0.25 inch) off inner front suspension lower arm strut ferrule if necessary.

If replacing front suspension lower arm strut, install strut rear sub-frame nut all the way down on threads. Install with nylon front suspension lower arm strut bushing facing forward (front of vehicle when installed).

Install outer front suspension lower arm strut ferrule and rear front suspension washer. Word "REAR" must face out.

Install front suspension lower arm strut bushing (without metal flange), with large end toward front sub-frame, onto outer front suspension lower arm strut ferrule.

Install front suspension lower arm strut in front sub-frame.
-
Install front suspension lower arm rear strut bushing (3B271), the word "FRONT" toward front of vehicle and metal flange toward front sub-frame.

Install front suspension washer, the words "THIS SIDE OUT" toward front of vehicle.
-
Install inner front suspension lower arm strut ferrule.
-
Loosely install front nut.
-
On front suspension lower arm end of the front suspension lower arm strut, install front suspension washer with cup to face away from arm and install front insulator with word "FRONT" to face away from front suspension lower arm.

Install front suspension lower arm strut into front suspension lower arm.
-
Install rear insulator, with word "REAR" to face away from front suspension lower arm.

Install front suspension washer with cup facing away from front suspension lower arm and install new nut. Tighten nut to 120-160 Nm (89-118 lb-ft).

Return rear front suspension lower arm strut to sub-frame nut to original position.

Install lower shock absorber bolt and nut. Do not tighten at this time.

Holding front suspension lower arm strut with wrench as outlined, tighten front suspension lower arm strut to sub-frame retaining nut to 120-160 Nm (89-118 lb-ft).

Tighten front suspension lower arm strut to front suspension lower arm retaining nut to 120-160 Nm (89-118 lb-ft).

Install rubber bumper onto front suspension lower arm strut.

Install brake hose bracket. Tighten retaining bolt to 11-16 Nm (9-11 lb-ft).

Install front brake anti-lock sensor. Tighten bolt to 4.6-6.8 Nm (40-60 lb-in).

Install tire and wheel assembly. Tighten lug nuts (1012) to 115-142 Nm (85-105 lb-ft).

Lower vehicle.

CAUTION: To prevent front suspension lower arm strut bushing wind-up, lower shock absorber nut must be tightened with vehicle weight on wheels (1007).
Position vehicle on "drive-on" hoist alignment rack. Push down on front end of vehicle and release to neutralize front suspension lower arm strut bushings. Tighten lower shock absorber nut to 160-220 Nm (118-162 lb-ft).

Check wheel alignment.
