J3 Chip Port Defense

Important How-To

READ THIS COMPLETELY. WE GET QUITE A BIT OF QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS SO PAY ATTENTION.

STEP 1:PROPERLY CLEANING THE J3 PORT:

  • We recommend taking the upper and lower cases off of the ECU board to do this CORRECTLY.
  • Take a rag with non chlorinated Brake Cleaner on the rag and wipe BOTH sides of the protective goop while digging in with your thumb nail in the rag. This might take a few wipes.
  • Once the protective goop is clear, start getting the silicone coating off of the silver pins. Use your bare thumbnail or something like it to "scrape" the CLEAR coating off BOTH SIDES of the SILVER pins.
  • Now, take something kinda sharp and start scribing the SILVER pins. Dull side of a breakaway razor does great.
  • Do not scrape off the copper, only scribe the silver.
  • Once scribed, grab some 1000 grit sand paper or emory cloth and scuff the pins in a cross-hatch pattern. You might start to see SOME copper. If so you've made it..
  • Wipe pins with rubbing alky. and assemble the ECU case.
  • Apply a thin coat of di-electric grease to the pins and install chip. Done..

NOW, DO NOT SKIP THE STEP BELOW!

STEP 2: PROTECTING THE MODULE/ECU

Once you have removed the ECU from the car, and have installed the chip on the J3 Port, you MUST protect it from arcing against the chassis. If it arcs while running or not, it will fry the ECU and chip. At that point you've blown your money.

Properly protect the module by using the plastic cover you popped off, or install the J3 Port cover supplied with your chip purchase and place it over the exposed terminals on the card-edge port of the modules back..

Some covers are made of metal so take note:

  • If your cover is plastic, run a few strips of Duct Tape over the plastic and ECU upper and lower covers like you see in the pics.
  • If it is a metal cover, find something plastic that covers the back of the terminals.
  • Some ECU cases have a smaller opening for the port access. In this case, you must trim the case accordingly.
  • If you lost the cover, make a durable non conductive one.
  • DO NOT use only the tape alone. It will tear through and cause the terminals to fault to chassis ground. Once that happens, the chip and ECU are toast.
  • AND FOR ANY AND EVERY REASON, THE PINS ON THE ECU MUST BE COMPLETELY CLEAN. IF NOT, THE CAR WILL RUN LIKE CRAP IF AT ALL**

If you follow these steps you will have a good running car. If not, you will be contacting us, only to have us point you right back to this page.

We hope you find this useful and understand the importance of doing it.

Carry-on...

NOTE: These photos include the switch and cable for the 4 position chip. If you have the single program version, you will not have a cable attached to the chip module. They also include the old version of our chip(s). The new version looks slightly different but still applies to what you see below.
